Madeline Psychotherapy
What I Offer
-
I offer one-on-one psychotherapy sessions that are typically 60 minutes long. I also offer 90-minute and 30-minute options.
-
I currently run groups and workshops that are somatic-based. Please reach out for more information! (see my calendar for current offerings).
-
Nature therapy incorporates one’s relationship to nature into therapeutic interventions. We may walk side-by-side on a Hamilton trail or sit on a blanket at a park. Common elements of nature therapy include mindfulness and sensory awareness practice, processing with embodiment, and connecting with the gifts of the land we live on.
*note: Nature therapy is a psychotherapy service that can be covered by insurance.
My Therapy Approach
In my approach, I walk alongside you to explore how early experiences and patterns are continuing to influence current symptoms and difficulties. I do this through helping you move through your experiences somatically (in the body), emotionally (feelings), and cognitively (all those sticky thoughts!). I don’t fix people (p.s. you don’t need fixing), I help them see the truth and be with them in their process.
I am the type of psychotherapist who shows up authentically as myself. My hope is to create and sustain a safe space where others feel comfortable and welcome to do the same.
-
Cognitively, working with me looks like bringing greater awareness to the narratives and beliefs you are stuck in.
We will get clear on your patterns and uncover your specific survival strategies you’ve built throughout your life to protect yourself in our social world.
I aim to help you see clearly the truth about how you are contributing to the pain you are experiencing.
We might explore questions like:
What are the defences you’ve created and built to keep yourself safe?
What are the “masks” you wear to avoid rejection and abandonment?
How are you performing rather than living authentically to you?
Where did these protective strategies come from?
How are they moving you toward and how are they pulling you away from your values and themes we all crave, such as connection and belonging, self-responsibility and autonomy, self-esteem, love, and a sense of safety in the world?
What thought loops are you getting stuck in and how can we listen to what’s underneath and compassionately intervene?
-
Emotionally, the work looks like expanding your repertoire of emotional language (perhaps on the surface we identify an irritability, but looking inward, we may see rejection, rage, shame, and longing that wants to be felt) and offering tools and ways to safely move through emotions.
My goal is to be with you, see you, and be attuned to your emotions. I have learned to genuinely love my own emotions and stop avoiding them, - I will help you to (slowly) stop avoiding yours too.
-
Somatically, I prioritize:
The mind-body-energy connection
The intelligence of the nervous system
Recognizing that much of what we carry lives in the body, not just the mind.
What this looks like:
Slowing down to listen to sensations, breath, numbness, impulses, tension, and patterns of activation and shutdown as meaningful information about our safety, protection, longings, and unmet needs.
I support you in learning how to stay present with sensation, emotion, and vulnerability without becoming overwhelmed or disconnected.
Over time, this somatic work creates greater regulation, emotional range, and a deeper sense of internal power. Through this, you reconnect with your body not as something to control, but as something to trust and listen to.
Bring your full self! I can stay.
Get To Know Me
My name is Madeline, but you can call me Maddy.
I love engaging in practices that help me explore the human experience. I have had the privilege of being in therapy all my life - I’ve engaged in over 1000 hours of individual sessions with numerous practitioners; some of whom I cherish as exceptional mentors. While I deeply enjoy 1:1 therapy, I find my true connection and calling in groups. I feel most alive when I am in community and on retreats.
As a human, I am full of energy. I love hiking and nature. Over the past two summers I was the Mental Health Professional at an Ontario lakeside overnight camp for youth. I absolutely love meeting new people, connecting, hearing their stories, and learning about their unique wounds, gifts, and life paths.
Some random facts: I love the colour blue (if you can’t tell by this website), I am thinking of adopting a doggo in the spring, and I am allergic to nuts, sesame seeds, and fish (epipen kid for life).
